The ship was destroyed by an electromagnetic storm in orbit of a Class M moon of Mab-Bu VI. The storm was caused by noncorporeal beings who had been imprisoned on the moon centuries before, and were seeking to escape by possessing the crew of the Essex. In 2368, the USS Enterprise-D detected the distress signal of the Essex, over 200 years old, and investigated the moon. The noncorporeal beings impersonated the crew of the Essex and attempted to take over the Enterprise, but were unsuccessful. (see TNG: Power Play) |
